Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Charity
Passing on unwanted presents might be seen as slightly impolite – unless it's done for a noble purpose.
A Philanthropic Auction
The leader of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, will offload a reported 270 presents received by her by foreign dignitaries on official trips. The diverse haul could include objects like a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentina's leader Javier Milei and a pair of exotic blue snake-skin shoes with gilded heels.
These items, combined, are valued at around €800,000. They are scheduled to be auctioned off via competitive bidding by a Rome-based art dealer. A date is yet to be set, but the aim is to conduct the sale by year's end, with the proceeds donated to a selection of charitable causes.
Storage Room Holdings
The presents are said to be kept in a storage room on the third floor of the prime minister's official office. Sources state that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her predecessors that have been stored away for years.
A complete inventory has not yet been disclosed, but a glimpse were revealed earlier this year when an 11-page list of items received was reviewed by officials. The question centered on if a rule restricting expensive presents was being respected. By law, a prime minister must declare presents valued above €300.
An International Assortment of Gifts
Among the items:
- A silk accessory from the leader of Albania, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
- A sari from Kerala from the Indian leader.
- A case of jewelry from the Slovakian president.
- A fine china tea service and a selection of wines from the Hungarian prime minister.
- A pottery dish from the ex-American leader.
- A digital device from the Ukrainian president.
- Paintings from Moldova.
- An assortment including makeup, a board, and numerous carpets from trips to North African and Middle Eastern countries.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts included the statuette from Milei and the blue python skin shoes," reports suggest.
Diplomatic Backdrop
Supporters have applauded Meloni, mostly from her allies, with garnering support from global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.
This unique auction symbolizes a novel approach to deal with the state presents that accumulate during a leader's tenure.
