Child of Former South African President Jacob G Zuma Refutes Terror-Related Charges as Court Case Commences
The child of previous South African Head of State Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror-linked allegations at the beginning of her court case in the coastal city of the city of Durban.
Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over statements she posted on social media in the past during fatal unrest in South Africa that came after the detention of her parent.
A seven-day period of chaos in multiple regions of the country in mid-2021, including looting and intentional burning, resulted in at least 300 individuals dead and caused damage worth an estimated $2.8bn (2.2 billion pounds).
The defendant has been accused of fuelling this violence and faces allegations of incitement to commit terror acts and public violence.
Context of the Proceedings
The unrest were concentrated in the provinces of Gauteng region and KwaZulu-Natal and came after the ex-leader's detention for ignoring a court order to appear as a witness at an investigation into allegations of graft while he was in power.
She has always denied the accusations against her, with her attorney in the past calling the prosecution's case as insufficient.
She has also repeatedly claimed the accusations against her were an bid to resolve political grievances with her father after he established his own political organization and competed against the African National Congress.
Backing and Court Representation
This was reinforced by the foundation, which claimed the legal matter was an "misuse of authority" and a "coordinated attempt" of "politically motivated and familial harassment" against the ex-leader and his relatives.
A few of supporters from her political organization, the political party, gathered outside the KwaZulu-Natal high court, while her father and other group representatives participated in the court sessions inside.
Her legal team has maintained that the proof presented by prosecutors is inadequate and lacks concrete grounds for a guilty verdict.
