Pat Bamford Joins the Blades Despite Leading Derogatory Songs About Coach Wilder
Patrick Bamford has joined the Championship side just half a year after leading derogatory songs directed at their manager, Chris Wilder.
The 32-year-old striker, a free agent since leaving Leeds, has put pen to paper on a agreement joining the second-tier strugglers until January. His seven-year career at Elland Road finished through agreement this past summer.
One of Bamford’s final notable acts while at Leeds involved leading insulting chants about Wilder during the club’s promotion celebrations in April. Currently, the one-cap England international will be playing for Wilder as the Blades’ manager looks to rescue his beloved club away from the bottom places.
Previous Conflict Involving Bamford & the Manager
Both men had history prior to Leeds won promotion to the top flight last season while Sheffield United were defeated in the promotion decider to Sunderland. The manager described the forward as “a muppet” when the situation was different in 2018-19 and the Blades secured automatic promotion while Leeds fell short in the playoffs.
Making Amends and Moving Forward
Everything appears to have been forgiven and forgotten with United, the Championship’s least productive attack, urgently requiring of improvement up front and Bamford looking to rejuvenate his career.
The song about Wilder gained traction this spring. A repentant Bamford along with Leeds boss, Daniel Farke, called the Sheffield United manager the following day.
Wilder commented at the time: “Spoke with Patrick recently and I have no problem at all with that. I'm uncertain about the words used from a fellow pro! However I valued and admired him giving me a call.
“We had 20 minutes and the same again I spoke to Daniel too and had a half-hour chat with him and he's a great person, a top guy. Back in my playing days we would give it and accept it and that’s an integral part of football at every level, even on a Sunday morning. I've got no problem at all. I am cool with it and I told him that to Pat.”
Recent Career Challenges
The forward made 18 games with Leeds United last season however the ex- Nottingham Forest, Chelsea and Boro striker has struggled with injury in recent years.
