Rob Edwards along with O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to succeed Vitor Pereira as head coach of Wolves.
Pereira was sacked on Sunday following the team's ten-game without a victory beginning to the Premier League campaign.
And both candidates - each of whom have previous links to the club - are among the options to be considered by the club ownership.
Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential obstacle to his hiring at Molineux.
Nevertheless the former Luton manager - who played more than 100 of appearances for the club during his playing career - is said to be a strong contender for the position.
The mid-career manager is reportedly enjoys backing from the club directors as they start the search of hiring a new head coach.
Gary O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise candidate, even though he would be a shock choice considering he was released by Wolves in December last year.
The former West Ham United midfielder is currently unemployed meaning the club would not need to provide any compensation.
