Shoaib Bashir Makes Unexpected Inclusion in England's Ashes Team

The English team has chosen a twelve-player selection just 48 hours before the first Ashes Test, with Shoaib Bashir securing a unexpected spot.

The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the tourists will wait until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spinner.

Both pace bowlers are included in the 12-man group, indicating there are no doubts about either fast bowler's fitness.

Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse round out the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if Bashir makes the final team.

Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers

Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an all-seam attack on a venue that has staged several previous Tests.

During these games, 134 wickets have fallen to seamers, with only 40 to spin.

Among these spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has taken 29, while all visiting spinners together have only eight.

On a ground known for its pace and bounce, and whose curator, Isaac McDonald, pledged that these characteristics are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with fast bowlers is still the probable decision.

Alternative Choices Weighed

There had been speculation that the all-rounder could be brought into the side to provide some slow bowling while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.

But McCullum has chosen to stick with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice slow bowler for the Ashes.

In July, Lyon commented on the English spinner as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, the experienced spinner is still the English best spinner.”

“This is a huge responsibility, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the past in Australian pitches,” Lyon said of spin bowling in matches Down Under.

“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents perform and excel out here.”
