The network's Top New Show of 2025 Secures a Substantial Renewal for Seasons 2 and 3.
During the fall season, the late-night programming block saw the return of its offbeat hit, Smiling Friends. Yet, later that same month, the network introduced a fresh animated series with a strikingly different tone. Haha, You Clowns was heartwarming and calm, evoking a cartoon version of a contemplative talk show. At a time often characterized by cynicism, this show's wholesomeness found an audience and propelled it a breakout hit.
A Major Commitment
In mid-December, Adult Swim made a major announcement: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for two more seasons. This offers showrunner Joe Cappa ample opportunity to develop the story of the Campbell family. The series follows three respectful teenage brothers whose central trait is their strong bond for their single father, with Cappa portraying for all four key characters.
"I am incredibly thankful to the viewers of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and shared it with others," said Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to hang out at the Campbell household for a little longer."
Network Praise
Accompanying the news laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "profoundly sincere and strangely uncanny." He shouted out the fans who found the show and advocated for its distinctly quirky style.
"All of you showed up for this new show, championed for it on social media, and helped it grow week over week so we could approve not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "As the show says: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Comforting Counterpoint
Earlier this fall, Haha, You Clowns was hailed as "a gentle counterpart" to more cynical adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family navigate their everyday routines.
At the time, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its current sarcastic tone. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we can't get ourselves out of,” said Cappa. “The attitude is that we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for a decade, and we need to laugh at something different now. It's time for comedy to grow.”
The Path Forward
With this renewal, with Haha, You Clowns set to continue, Cappa may well catalyze that comedic shift. If nothing else, the renewal ensures audiences additional episodes to experience the gentle humor of the endearing Campbell clan.
The season 1 finale of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. The complete first season is available for streaming on HBO Max.
