Seven-time Grand Slam singles champion Venus Williams has secured a special invitation for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

Historic Comeback to Melbourne Park

Tournament officials confirmed on the weekend that the forty-five-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her debut. Back in 1998, she defeated her younger sister Serena in the early stage before exiting in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had earlier stated in the month of November her intention to play in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks before the Australian Open. Organizers added that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Australia's Hobart International a week later, immediately prior to the start of play at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the singles competition on two separate instances, losing to Serena in the championship matches of 2003 and 2017.

"I’m excited to return in Australia and looking forward to playing during the summer season," Williams stated. "I’ve had so many incredible memories there, and I’m grateful for the chance to return to a venue that has meant so much to my career."

Williams' overall record at Melbourne Park stands at an notable 54 victories and 21 defeats. The upcoming edition will mark the 22nd time she has appeared in the main draw.

Establishing a Fresh Benchmark

The tournament pointed out that Williams is poised to be the most senior female player to compete in an Australian Open singles competition, surpassing the mark previously held by Japan’s Kimiko Date, who was forty-four when she lost in the first round at Melbourne Park in 2015.
