What's Inside that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in the Hit Series?
During the bulk of season 5 of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned in a realm of memories built from the past of Vecna. The search for a way out in episode 6 forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's early years—a discovery that may just hold the secret to his downfall for good.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft
Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device found in Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.
In this place, they observe a child version of Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man reacts violently, striking Henry in the hand. To protect himself, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event went deeper than a fight for life.

The Philadelphia Experiment and A Spy's Mission
The play reveals the 1943 event, which reportedly teleported a vessel into a realm known as the Abyss. The ship was attacked, and the lone returnee was the captain, who came back in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.
That survivor's offspring, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this dimensional breach in Nevada. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Soviets, who were keen to start their parallel research. The man in the mine shaft is that employee.
The Briefcase's Contents
Considering what is known about Brenner's work, the case would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon contact with the blood, causing the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects under Brenner's care.
Another possibility, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the secret facility, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. The stage play explains that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, returning after half a day fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the control of a dark entity, similar to how the character Will was influenced by the shadow monster in season 2.
Confronting Terror
The reason Henry avoids the cave linked to that memory highlights how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he commands the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a climactic battle between Vecna and Will, who has confronted his own deepest fears to gain strength.
His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Crucially, Will now understands what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a critical advantage in the endgame conflict ahead.
